What Is Plantar Fascia?
The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band that connects the heel to the toes on the bottom of your foot. It helps maintain the proper arch in your foot. The fascia can become injured and inflamed creating heel and foot pain from over exertion, prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces, excessive stair or hill climbing, jumping and landing from heights and from being chronically overweight.
Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis Without Drugs, Shots or Surgery
The goal of treatment is to relieve stress on the plantar fascia and reduce inflammation. In order to do that the forces on the plantar fascia must be equalized. Often the powerful calf muscles are too tight and that pulls up on the heel and creates increased tension in the fascia under the foot. By relaxing and lengthening the calf muscle, tension is reduced from the plantar fascia. This is done with heat and electrical muscle stimulation as well as specialized stretches and exercises.
While the tension is being relieved, the inflammation is reduced with electrical impulses and cold laser therapy.
The treatments typically take 30 min. and are painless. You will be given home exercises to do daily to assist the recovery process. How many sessions and for how long depends on how long you have suffered from plantar fasciitis and how severe it is. Many people find relief in only a few treatments, others take longer.
